A study done in 2012 by the Athlone Institute of Technology, found that coconut oil and its properties have the ability to suppress and eliminate bad bacteria. It also showed that coconut oil was extremely useful when it came to removing strep mutans, Candida albicans and even Streptococcus.

The one who led the researchers was Dr. Damien Brady and he stated that using coconut oil for taking care of your oral and dental health is far more efficient than most chemical additives. However the study wasn’t able to reach a conclusive level and therefore it wasn’t able to prove that coconut oil should be included and used as a mouthwash.

The method of using coconut oil for maintaining a good oral health is also known by many as “oil pulling”. The way it works is that you swish one tablespoon of oil in your mouth cavity for around 15-20 minutes. The oil helps pull as many bacteria as it can from the mouth into the oil.

Dentistry IQ has stated that this process is a result of bacteria drawn to fat in the skin being drawn to fat in the oil. And once they get in the oil, the lauric acid contained in the coconut oil shuts down and eliminates the bacteria.

At first, this method might be odd and hard for you but once you master it by adjusting the amount of oil you need for it to have an actual effect, you will be amazed by the results.

After using the oil, you need to spit it out in the trash (not the sink) and rinse your mouth with water to prevent leftover bacteria from moving back where they came from.

Aside from this, brush your teeth as well since this method isn’t something that replaces regular tooth brushing.
