Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Wear A Bra, According To Science

Science has revealed the hazards involved in wearing bras for women.

Lately, women have witnessed a lot of debate as to whether bras cause sagging, prevent sagging or cause breast cancer, which leaves most of them highly confused about the’ bra issue’.


First of all, it is undeniable that bras are supporting device for breasts, especially large-sized ones.  Bustier women would actually suffer a lot of discomfort, even back pain, without the support bras provide.

However, not all bras types are good for what ails you. If, for example, you prefer those that make your breast look bigger or perkier, as opposed to those that provide best support, you could be putting yourself at risk of some serious health issues.


October 13th is National No Bra Day, a day when women are encouraged to NOT wear their bra. Perhaps those who invented the day, in order to promote breast cancer awareness and help raise money for research, knew they could better attract attention by asking women to ditch their brassiere. But, who knew that not wearing a bra could actually be better for our breasts?

Bras are intended to keep women “in place” and if you’re an active woman with large breasts, this can be a good thing. It’s hard to move around when every move that you make is emphasized by your breasts’ corresponding movements.

However, according to sport science researcher Jean-Denis Rouillion, a professor at the University of Franche-Comte in the town of Besancon- and his 15 year study of the effect of bras on 330 women between the ages of 18-35 years- wearing a bra from early age did nothing to support the chest, reduce back pain or prevent premature sagging. “Medically, physiologically, anatomically, breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity.”

The study revealed:

  • Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer;
  • Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day, but not to bed, had a 1 out of 7 risk;
  • Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 52 risk;
  • Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer.

In relation to this, many health experts and scientists today support the idea that wearing a tight fitting bra can cut off lymph drainage, so that toxic chemicals are trapped in the breast.

This can lead to the development of breast cancer, due to the fact that the lymph function to eliminate all the toxins that enter your body on a daily basis is compromised.


If you want to reduce the risk of compromising your breast health, you need to consider several factors related to this piece of underwear. The degree of blockage of lymphatic drainage depends on the style of the bra, the tightness, and the length of time worn.

Owing to the fact that many women choose their bras by the latest fashion, you can avoid some of the improper drainage issues if you wear a bra that is properly fitted rather than the latest trend.

Ideally, you could start going braless, but you might need some time to adjust. To avoid the uneasiness you might feel because of your nipples showing, try wearing a tank with a built-in bra or a bandeau under your clothes. This will help you feel some of the tightness and support a bra provides.

It’s important to understand that your health depends on the choices you make. If you know that ditching your bra will distance you from breast cancer, it’s definitely worth trying!
