With that said, the proper functioning of the kidneys is essential for our overall health. However, our bodies are good at finding numerous ways to signal us whether something is wrong. It might be through urine, vomiting, breathing issues or maybe tiredness, which is why these signals should never be avoided and ignored.
- Low Water Intake
Around 70% of Americans aren’t drinking their recommended amount of water daily. When there isn’t enough water in the body, the blood becomes more concentrated and this can result in less blood flow which affects the kidney’s ability to flush out toxins from the body. This leads to a toxin build up in the body that can cause many other health issues.
The minimum recommended glasses of water are 10-12 according to the National Kidney Foundation. Drinking this amount will ensure optimal kidney function.
- Too Much Caffeine
Over-consumption of caffeine can lead to hypertension that causes your kidneys to overwork and become damaged. Caffeine has also been linked by many experts to kidney stones and an increase in calcium excretion in urine.
But this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consume caffeine at all. Drinking moderate amounts of 1-2 cups of coffee a day is a healthy dosage that might provide you with a few benefits.
- Too Much Salt
Consuming too much salt will extremely damage your kidneys along with other organs that will lead to other health issues. Kidneys metabolize 95% of the food-consumed sodium but excess sodium intake will overwork the organ and put unnecessary strain on it. What will happen is that your kidneys will work harder to eliminate the salt and this will result in the kidney putting aside and reducing the water retention in the body which results in an increased blood pressure.
The recommended dose of sodium shouldn’t be any larger than just 5 grams.
- Too Much Alcohol
Moderate consumption of alcohol isn’t as harmful as some may think, however over exaggeration with alcohol can be extremely bad for your kidneys since it puts stress on both your liver and the kidneys. This stress can cause health issues such as kidney failure since it results from uric acid being deposited in the rental tubules that lead to tubular obstruction.
The recommended amount of alcohol intake daily is about 2 drinks for men and 1 for seniors and women.
- Sleep Deprivation
Our fast lives and stressful jobs can often leave us sleep deprived. Experts all around the world claim that 6-8 hours of sleep a night is essential for our bodies to function properly.
When we sleep, our body tissues regenerate but when we lack sleep, then this regeneration process is interfered and stopped and as a result we develop either organ or kidney damage.
A lack of sleep can also lead to atherosclerosis and high blood pressure according to a few recent studies.
