Twelve Suitable Scraps to Regrow Plants

  1. Garlic from Cloves

Growing garlic at home is very easy to do because all you need is a single clove and you’ll get the entire head of garlic. However, it is necessary to know what type of garlic can be regrown, so, opt for organic garlic and choose large cloves (mistakenly called Elephant garlic).

Place the end of the clove with the root down into the soil, like planting any other bulb.  It isn’t necessary to remove the paper slip from the clove and make sure to place the pot in a warm part of the home with direct sunlight. The dark area of the clove will turn, very soon into a root in time.

  1. Sprout Celery in Water

The part of the celery where there are a few roots is dipped in a shallow dish, so that the root is always submerged. In case it is used for a long time, it is necessary to transplant it into the soil after a while

  1. Beets from Scraps

The tops of the beets (where the leaves and stems join onto the root) are used to regrow them.

Placing the tops in a container of water will allow green tops to begin growing in a matter of days. When they are ready for harvest, use them, or they can be transplanted back into the ground.

  1. Scallion from Scraps

Scallions grow easily and fast so they are one of the best plants to replant from scraps.

Cut off the root of the scallion, leaving about 1″ to 2″ of the stem, and place them in jar water. You can also grow them in the soil for a longer harvest.

  1. Basil Stems in Water

Basil, like many other herbs, can also be re-grown using plant cuttings/ scraps.

Place a stem of around 10cm (4 inches) long into a glass of water, and make sure that the leaves are above the water level. When roots begin to grow, these cuttings can be transplanted into containers, or directly into your garden.

  1. Lettuce from Scraps

Placing the leaves in a bowl with a little water in the bottom and keeping the bowl in a sunny spot you can regrow the lettuce too. Make sure that every few days you wash the leaves with water. The new roots should begin to grow along with new leaves in a few weeks. For longer use, it is necessary to transplant it into the soil.

  1. Carrots from Scraps

Like beets, set aside about two inches on the end of vegetable and submerge half of it in water in a shallow bowl. Place the bowl by the windowsill and in one to two weeks the green leaves will flourish.

  1. Regrow Onion Tops

Cut off the top of the onion and stick it in a saucer of water. It is recommended to dry off it a bit first to avoid rot. When small side roots appear, you can keep it in the water or plant it out in the soil. Sometimes, the new taproots might not be perfectly shaped but they still taste good in soups and other dishes!

  1. Grow Rosemary from Stem Cuttings

After rosemary has finished flowering, collect 6- to 8-inch stem cuttings, remove leaves from the lower half and dip cut ends in a glass of water. Put the glass on a warm place, and once the roots start to grow, just replant them in soil.

  1. Grow Sweet Potatoes in Water

Cut the sweet potato in half and suspend each half using toothpicks or twigs above a shallow container of water. After a few days, the sweet potatoes should begin to form roots and sprouts will grow out of the top of the pieces.

When the sprouts grow to around 10cm (4 inches in height), replant them in the soil for a longer crop.

  1. Grow Potatoes in Soil

Any part of the potato that includes an ‘eye’ on them (the small indentations from which the shoots grow) can be replanted to grow new potato plants.

Leave the potato scraps to dry out slightly overnight and plant them in the soil with the eyes facing up, like planting the seed potatoes.

  1. Regrow Radishes

To regrow the radishes, you need a glass of water, potting soil, toothpicks, and some radishes. Cut the radish in half, and cut off some of the green leaves on the top. By using toothpicks, place the top half dangling over water to suspend it in the air over the glass, but not to submerge it completely. The roots should start to grow in a few weeks out from the bottom.

When you notice the roots, you can transplant it to a pot of soil if desired.
